Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

As a professional with 19 years of experience working in schools and with teenagers across the globe and in Australia, I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of ADHD on individuals. ADHD  is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention and impulsive behavior.  Worldwide, it is estimated that approximately 5-9% of children have ADHD may continue into adulthood.

ADHD can be a debilitating condition, leading to emotional and social difficulties that impact a person’s quality of life. Symptoms can include forgetfulness, disorganization, absent-mindedness, impulsivity, unable to start tasks, unable to listen, daydreaming, sleep problems, hyperactivity and so on.  Individuals with ADHD often struggle with low self-esteem, negative coping mechanisms, social isolation, extreme procrastination, and perfectionism, which can lead them to underperform in academic, vocational, and personal domains.

The good news is that ADHD can be diagnosed and effectively managed with the right approach, including medication and therapy. It is crucial to seek professional help and support to minimize the impact of negative self-perception, impaired academic performance, lack of ambition and social difficulties.

At our practice, we specialize in diagnosing and treating ADHD and its associated side effects, using evidence-based interventions to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. ADHD can be very challenging for parents. Parents of children with ADHD may feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and guilty that they cannot help their child better. They may worry that their child’s struggles are their fault or feel like they are failing as a parent. Additionally, parents may face judgement and criticism from others who may not understand that the behavior of their child is not just a result of poor parenting. Parents of a child with ADHD often need support to learn how to manage the symptoms and help their child thrive. It is important for parents to know that they are not alone and that seeking support and guidance is an important step toward helping their child.
