Relationships Therapy

The therapist’s role in relationships counselling is to assist couples in building stronger, healthier relationships by guiding them through the process of addressing concerns and developing productive communication strategies. Specifically, the therapist helps facilitate open conversation between partners, identifies negative patterns in communication, and recommends specific techniques to create positive behavioural change.

The therapist also provides clients with a neutral and safe environment to address concerns and discuss their unique perspectives. This allows the therapist to help clients discover and understand their joint reality. By focusing on individual and shared experiences, the therapist can help clients to identify negative habits, develop more positive communication strategies and to create customized plans that works for the couple.

Rich and John Gottman (1999) has documented many effective techniques for this process, including emotion coaching, active listening, and re-creating past experiences. Through a combination of techniques, couples learn to communicate better, understand and respect each other’s perspectives, and work towards the common goal of building a healthy and thriving relationship.

There are many benefits to couples counselling, including strengthening relationship foundation, fostering conflict resolution skills, and gaining insight into patterns of behavior that may be harming the relationship. Couples counseling can help to identify ways to re-connect and re-establish intimacy, creating deeper bonds between partners.

At Release Your Mind, we believe that couples counseling can be beneficial not only in addressing current concerns but also in developing new and healthier ways of relating to one another.
